Nobody is sure exactly why the town was abandoned, but it was subject to numerous raid from several aggressive tribes. This ancient town was pretty advanced for it’s time (it was built around the 12th century), with a mosque, a palace, and large stone houses.
These houses were complex for their time, with bathrooms with drains, and overhead basins to flush the toilets. The city’s streets were laid out at right angles and had drainage gutters. There were also wells which supplied water to the community.
The material used to construct the buildings was made from coral reef from the nearby ocean. The ruins were declared a historical monument in 1927.
